Meet the Farmers

Meet some of the farmers from the Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Cooperative in Ghana, co-owners of Divine Chocolate.

Gladys Okai

Gladys Okai lives in Fenaso-Domeabra in the Bekwai region of Ghana. Fairtrade premiums have paid for a well in the village which has had an enormous impact on the whole community.

Francis Bediako-Manu

Francis Bediako-Manu is 51 and lives in Mem in the Mansu area. He has a total of around 15 acres of cocoa trees, and produces up to 30 bags of beans in a good year.

Comfort Kumeah

Comfort Kumeah lives in the small town of Mem in the Ashanti region of Ghana. She is a member of Kuapa Kokoo cocoa growers’ cooperative and was recently elected the national secretary for the farmers’ union and the chair of the farmers trust.

Elias Mohammed

Elias Mohammed is a 52 year old cocoa farmer, and is a member of the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative living in Bayerebon3. He has two and a half acres of farming land producing about twelve bags of cocoa a year. He has five children and has been able to send them all to the school in the village built with Fairtrade premiums. Two have now gone on to senior secondary school.

Jennifer Oforiwaa Kusi

Jennifer is 14 years old and lives in Bayerebon 3 village. Her father is a cocoa farmer and a member of the Kuapa Kokoo farmers’ cooperative, and her mother runs a shop selling basic foodstuffs like rice.
